Making Great Prints.
Optimize the potential of your inkjet printer.
- Crop to correct aspect ratio. Save as 16 bit TIFF into the TIFF folder you created with a name that reflects the finished size of the image. ie: 2008_01_20_Birds005_8x10.tif
- In Photoshop, open the image and click on Edit-RESIZE. Your image should already be saved in the correct aspect ratio so resize the image by changing the longer dimension to 10 if you are printing an 8x10 for example. Click on Bi-Cubic (Smoother) for up sizing and Bi-Cubic (Sharpen) for down sizing.
- Back in Capture NX: click 'Adjust'-'Focus'-'High Pass'. The screen will go grey. Adjust the intensity JUST until you see the black outlines appear on portraits. On Landscapes add about 3/10 to the value where the black first appears. Click on Opacity. Click on the drop down menu that has ALL in it. Click on Luminence / Chrominence . Move the Chrominence slider ALL the way to zero. Click on drop dowm menu that has Normal in it. Click on Overlay. Adjust the opacity of the Luminence sliderdown to around 70%. Experiment with this for your printer.
If needed on a portrait use the ADD paint brush to add this High Pass adjustment only to the Eyes, Lips and Hair.
On a landscape use the SUBTRACT brush on stuff like leaves in the distance. These tend to print a bit harsh. Each image is different, so play with selective ADD/SUBTRACT painting with HIGH PASS to get comfortable with it.
ON THE PRINTER
I have an Epson Stylus Pro 3800 and can only attest to the results I get with it.
- Download the current PREMIUM drivers and install them for YOUR printer.
- Use factory paper and ink for best results with factory printer drivers.
In Capture NX:
- Click on File-Print.
- Select YOUR Printer from the drop down list.
- Click on Properties. When the window opens, click on ADVANCED. This opens up more options that allow you to control the print process.
- Click on ICM and then select NO COLOR CORRECTION. This disables the printer from managing the file to be printed. We want to do this through Capture NX.
- Turn off HIGH SPEED and EDGE SMOOTHING printing on the left side of menu.
- Select paper type of SHEET if using cut sheets being fed to print, ROLL if Roll feeding.
- Select the paper you are using: ie Ultra Premium Luster
- Select the QUALITY: I prefer BEST PHOTO for good resolution and color on most images. I use PHOTO when printing contact sheets or quick snap shots. RPM only for images that are lacking IMPORTANT fine detail.
- Select the sheet size you are using 8.5x11,13x19 etc.
- Click on SAVE at the bottom and name this setting something you remember for the Paper Quality and Printing Quality,- ie: LUSTER BEST PHOTO.
- Click Apply and OK. Then OK your way back to Capture NX.
